What is a body builder?

Defines a commercial truck body builder and explains how specialized bodies are engineered and installed onto compatible chassis.

General Industry Education Updated

A body builder is a manufacturer that designs and installs specialized truck bodies onto commercial truck chassis supplied by chassis manufacturers.

After the chassis manufacturer completes the vehicle’s cab and drivetrain, the body builder engineers and installs the appropriate cargo body for the intended application. This process requires careful integration of the body with the chassis while maintaining proper weight distribution, structural performance, and compliance with applicable standards.

Body builders produce a wide range of products, including dry freight bodies, refrigerated bodies, service bodies, platform bodies, dump bodies, and specialty vocational equipment.

Because truck bodies are engineered for specific applications, body builders work closely with dealers, distributors, fleet managers, and end users to ensure the finished vehicle meets operational requirements.
